How to restore your Digital Vault.

Upgrading to a newer smartphone, or for some other reason need to restore your vault on a different device? No problem - this article shows how your trusted Guardians can authorize your reinstall of the Vault12 app with your assets and configuration intact.

There are a few scenarios where you may no longer have a Digital Vault on your phone or inside your Vault12 app. This could be if you have changed phones because your phone was lost or stolen - or perhaps you are traveling without your phone, and need to access assets stored in your Vault.

Here's an overview of the Vault12 setup process, showing you how you can restore your Vault.

1. Download and Install

To download the Vault12 app, either visit the Vault12 website or from your mobile device, open the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and search for 'Vault12,' or click one of these links:

To make sure you are downloading the correct app - the Developer should be listed as "Vault12, Inc."

2. Initiate Vault Restore

A restore can be initiated by swiping to the "Restore a Vault" option. After choosing that option, you will be asked to allow access to contacts and to turn on notifications.

3. Restoration Options

You have two different ways to restore the shards held by Guardians.

  1. Contact your Guardian.
  2. Scan a Guardian device.
The next steps will show you what you need to do, and also what your Guardian needs to do in order to help you restore your device.
Note: You only need to contact as many Guardians as are specified in the "Number of Guardians needed to confirm" setting for your original Vault. In this example, we will contact 2 Guardians out of a total of 4.

4. Contact Guardians

Since Vault12, Inc. does not store any information about your Vault or your Guardians, you will have to contact your Guardians yourself directly. This could be via phone, text, video, or in-person - any method where your Guardian can validate that you are in fact who you say you are.

When you speak to your Guardian, ask them to do the following:

  1. Open the Vault12 app on their phone.
  2. Press on the Vault they are Guarding for you - it will be listed in the section "Vaults you are Guarding."
  3. Confirm in the app that they have been contacted by you.
  4. Choose the Vault restore option.
  5. Choose a method to send the generated link to you.
That's it.

2. Select Vault being guarded

3. Confirm request

4. Confirm Vault restore

5. Scan Guardian devices

The second method to recover shards from your Vault is to scan configured Guardian devices. This works for any of your Guardians whom you are able to meet in person, or for devices that you set up yourself as Guardian devices.

The steps to scan a Guardian device are as follows:

  1. On the Guardian device, open the Vault12 app.
  2. Press on the Vault being guarded - it will be listed in the section "Vaults you are Guarding."
  3. Confirm the request.
  4. Choose the Vault restore option: Display Vault12 Code.
  5. On your phone, select the option to Scan a Device.
  6. Bring both devices close to each other, and scan the QR code displayed on the Guardian device.

3. Confirm the request

4. Choose Vault restore

5. Select "Display Vault12 Code"

6. Get ready to be scanned

Now, using your phone, scan the Vault12 code displayed on the Guardian device.

After the QR scan is performed, the Guardian device will send you a restoration link.

Scan Vault12 code

After scanning, press close, and keep app running

6. Guardian confirmations

Once the total number of Guardians needed to confirm have responded, and you have acknowledged by clicking on the restoration links that their confirmations generated, your Vault will be restored.

Congratulations you now have your Vault recreated on your device. To access your assets, you will need to unlock them - see next section.

7. Access your assets

To access the assets stored in your recently restored Vault, you will need to send an unlock request, once Guardians respond you will be able to access your asset - which will be locked again automatically within 2 hours.

Digital Inheritance: Get ready today.

Vault12 Digital Inheritance is the first solution to offer a simple, direct, and secure way to ensure cryptocurrency, NFTs and other Web3 digital assets can be inherited by future generations.

Digital Inheritance enables investors to designate an individual or a mobile device as a guardian that will inherit their entire portfolio of digital assets inside a secure digital Vault once the time comes, eliminating undue risk and the need to continually update an inventory or issue updated instructions which result in privacy leakage.

Self-Custody & Backup for Wallet Seed phrases, NFTs, and Secrets.

Designed to be used alongside traditional hardware, software, and online wallets, Vault12 helps cryptocurrency owners, professional crypto traders, and high-net-worth investors safeguard their digital assets without storing anything in the cloud or in fact, any one single location. This increases protection and decreases the risks of loss.

(Note: The Vault12 app is not a crypto wallet and does not hold cryptocurrency. It is a Vault that safeguards your wallet seed phrase and private keys, associated files for NFTs, and digital art).

The Vault12 app helps you self-custody, backup, and provide legacy inheritance for all your web3 digital assets, including NFTs, wallet seed phrases, secrets like keys, PIN codes, DAO project keys, and digital art.

Collectors, ensure your Art is protected for the future

Whether your digital art is suitable for a phone, or represents much higher resolution multimedia, make sure that you have backed up a copy in case the resource link is disrupted in the future. Digital art can easily be added to the Vault either via the mobile app or via the desktop utility. Once you have stored your artwork in your Vault, it will also benefit from inheritance once you activate that in your app.

Creators, protect your Projects.

As a creator you can use Vault12 to safeguard not just your NFT and crypto wallets, but also original digital artwork. Project creators will always have to deal with multiple wallets - inventory, treasury as well as future royalty wallets.

Vault12 safeguards your project assets, increasing protection and decreasing the risks of loss, whilst ensuring that everything is ready to go to be passed onto future generations, when the need arises.
