If you need to access your Seed Phrase or other assets from your vault, this article shows how you can ask your Guardians to unlock them to grant you temporary access.
If you used Vault12 to store your seed phrase, this guide describes how you can access that seed phrase by unlocking your asset.
To access a seed phrase that you have stored in your Vault, you will follow these steps:
- Confirm that your seed phrase is backed up in your Vault.
- In the Vault12 app, request that the asset be Unlocked.
- Wait for Guardians to confirm your request.
- View the asset.
Confirm Digital Vault setup
In order to access your seed phrase or backup code that has been stored in your Vault, first check that you have a working Vault, and that your Guardians are available.
If you don't have a Vault because you changed phones, then you can recover your entire Vault - see instructions for Vault recovery. After recovery, your Vault will again exist on your phone along with your stored assets, and you can proceed with these instructions to unlock the stored seed phrase.
If you have not created a Digital Vault, and assigned Guardians to protect it, please follow these instructions (however, since you did not have a Digital Vault, the new Vault created will be empty).
Assets stored in Vault
Verify assets and Guardians
To verify that your assets are backed up in this Vault, go to your Vault dashboard, and click on "View Vault." This will show you the assets stored in the distributed Vault. If the seed phrase asset you are looking for is not shown, then it may be stored in another Vault on another device. You will need to remember which Guardians were protecting that Vault, and contact them to initiate a recovery. See instructions.
Once you have confirmed that your assets are indeed stored in the Vault, confirm whether your Guardians are available: click on the "Guardian" tab to view them. If all of your Guardians are shown as active, you can proceed to request an Unlock.
If your Guardians are not active, then you should proceed with the following steps - however, you may want to call your Guardians and ask them to open the Vault12 app on their phone.
All Guardians active
Unlock the asset
To Unlock the asset, go to the Vault dashboard, click on "View Vault," and then click on the seed phrase asset that you wish to Unlock.

Await Guardian confirmations
When you press "Unlock Asset," all of your Guardians are sent a notification - and as soon as they respond by pressing Unlock, you will receive a confirmation. We encourage Guardians to always contact the owner before confirming any request. Based on your Vault settings, you will need to wait until the requisite number of confirmations have been sent by your Guardians. In our example shown, we have a 2/4 Vault, which requires 2 confirmations from amongst 4 Guardians.
If your Guardians are not responding, you should contact them directly, and ask them to open the app on their device.
Confirm request to Guardians
Monitor Guardian confirmations and unlock status
View the seed phrase
As soon as all confirmations have been received, your asset will be unlocked for 2 hours, and you can proceed to view it.
Display seed phrase
Your asset will automatically lock again after 2 hours.

Inheritance and self-custody for CryptocurrencyVault12 Explainer
Vault12 Product Demo
Vault12 Digital Inheritance is the first solution to offer a simple, direct, and secure way to ensure cryptocurrency, NFTs and other Web3 digital assets can be inherited by future generations.
Digital Inheritance enables investors to designate an individual or a mobile device as a guardian that will inherit their entire portfolio of digital assets inside a secure digital Vault once the time comes, eliminating undue risk and the need to continually update an inventory or issue updated instructions which result in privacy leakage.
Designed to be used alongside traditional hardware, software, and online wallets, Vault12 helps cryptocurrency owners, professional crypto traders, and high-net-worth investors safeguard their digital assets without storing anything in the cloud or in fact, any one single location. This increases protection and decreases the risks of loss.
(Note: The Vault12 app is not a crypto wallet and does not hold cryptocurrency. It is a Vault that safeguards your wallet seed phrase and private keys, associated files for NFTs, and digital art).
The Vault12 app helps you self-custody, backup, and provide legacy inheritance for all your web3 digital assets, including NFTs, wallet seed phrases, secrets like keys, PIN codes, DAO project keys, and digital art.
Whether your digital art is suitable for a phone, or represents much higher resolution multimedia, make sure that you have backed up a copy in case the resource link is disrupted in the future. Digital art can easily be added to the Vault either via the mobile app or via the desktop utility. Once you have stored your artwork in your Vault, it will also benefit from inheritance once you activate that in your app.
As a creator you can use Vault12 to safeguard not just your NFT and crypto wallets, but also original digital artwork. Project creators will always have to deal with multiple wallets - inventory, treasury as well as future royalty wallets.
Vault12 safeguards your project assets, increasing protection and decreasing the risks of loss, whilst ensuring that everything is ready to go to be passed onto future generations, when the need arises.
